There are several HVAC system issues that can be frustrating, and one of the best candidates here is when your home or building's thermostat simply goes blank and stops working. This is different from most other HVAC issues, which tend to originate from components that you can see and hear -- what do you do when your display screen simply doesn't show up anymore?
At Airtime Heating & Cooling, we're here to help. We offer a wide range of heating and air conditioning repair and replacement services to clients in Draper, including comprehensive thermostat solutions for all our clients. What are some of the reasons why your thermostat may have gone blank? Some are relatively simple and can likely be remedied on your own, while others may be more significant and require assistance from our team or other professionals. This two-part blog series will go over everything you need to know.
We noted that certain issues of a blank thermostat are pretty easy to remedy, and this is one of them. If your thermostat is going blank, the first thing you should do is check and replace the batteries if necessary. Most digital or programmable thermostats will use AAA or AA batteries, which are easy to find and relatively inexpensive.
If replacing the batteries in your thermostat doesn't seem to do the trick, it may be due to a power issue that's not related to the batteries at all.
If you have a blank thermostat and replacing the batteries doesn't seem to work, there may be an issue with the power source for your thermostat. The first thing you should do is check the circuit breaker or fuse box for your home or building and see if the breaker for your thermostat has been tripped or if a fuse has blown. If so, simply reset the breaker or replace the fuse and see if that does the trick.
You should also check to see if there's any loose wiring behind your thermostat. If any of the wires are loose or disconnected, that could be the root of your power issue. You may be able to reconnect them on your own, but it's always best to call in a professional if you're unsure.
It may sound silly, but you'd be surprised how many of our clients come to us with a blank thermostat and the issue is that their entire home or building's power is out! If you live in an area that's prone to thunderstorms or other extreme weather, it's always a good idea to have a flashlight on hand in case of a power outage. Once you've confirmed that your home or building's power is out, all you can do is wait for it to come back on.
There are a few other potential causes of a blank thermostat, but these three are some of the most common. In our next blog post, we'll go over a few more potential causes and what you can do about them. Stay tuned!
