Winter HVAC Safety: Inspection, Maintenance, Hazards

There are a few key home components around which safety is always paramount, and the various components that comprise your HVAC system are a great example here. And while certain HVAC safety practices remain the same year-round, there are also some that will fluctuate based on the time of year, including the current Utah winter.

At Airtime Heating & Cooling, we're here to offer a wide range of heating repair, furnace tune-ups and related services for new or used furnaces to clients around Riverton, Bluffdale, Herriman, Lehi and nearby areas. We also provide basic expertise on how to keep yourself and your family safe when operating and maintaining the HVAC system in any way. Here are some general winter-specific HVAC safety tips across this two-part blog series.

Pre-Winter Furnace Inspection

One key element of HVAC safety in the winter is an area that should have been carried out during the fall period: Your pre-winter furnace inspection. This is the time for a specialist to come check your furnace and ensure it's in top shape before the cold temperatures arrive, ensuring all parts are functional and there are no potential hazards.

During this inspection, our technicians will check for any cracks or leaks that could cause carbon monoxide exposure, as well as clean and replace any necessary filters to keep the air quality in your home at its best. We'll also look for any other issues that may require repair or replacement before winter.

Furnace Maintenance Reminder

Along with this pre-winter inspection, it's important to remember furnace maintenance throughout the season as well. This includes regularly replacing filters and scheduling tune-ups as needed - ideally once per year, but possibly more if you're noticing any signs of wear or damage.

In addition, be sure to keep the area around your furnace clear and free of any debris or flammable items. This will prevent any potential fire hazards and allow for proper ventilation.

Knowing Common Winter Problems or Hazards

In a place like Utah, there are a few specific winter hazards you should be aware of with your HVAC system. These include potential frozen pipes, which can cause a major issue if not addressed promptly, as well as issues like ice and snow buildup on the exterior unit or even inside the home.

In addition to these concerns, also be aware of any unusual smells or sounds coming from your furnace. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, it's important to call a professional immediately for inspection and potential repairs.

In part two of our series, we'll go over several other important winter HVAC safety tips to keep in mind. For more on this or any of our furnace repair, air conditioning or heating services, speak to the staff at Airtime Heating & Cooling today.
